IMPORTANT DATES:

New Members Night is

scheduled for Friday, June 19. Both new and existing members are invited for tennis and light refreshments.

The Canada Day Tournament, organized by the Ladies’ Division 2B team, is now scheduled for Wednesday, July 1. A sign-up sheet has been posted in the club house. Participation is limited so sign-up early!

The City of White Rock lessons - scheduled for Wednesday mornings - have been cancelled for the month of June.

Friday Mixed Doubles

An email was received from a member suggesting that Friday nights be set aside for drop-in mixed doubles. After some discussion the executive agreed that the following format will be tried on June 26 and July 10, and, if successful, will continue for the summer.

  • all three courts will be reserved from 6:30 - 10 p.m. for mixed doubles;

  • separate sign-up sheets will be provided for men and women allowing those individuals who don’t have a spouse/partner to participate;

  • the numbers will be limited to 12 women and 12 men and will be on a first-come-first-served basis;

  • those participating will be responsible for organizing the play.

Beach League

The club will be participating in Beach League again this year. The matches are held on Sunday mornings and are scheduled to start the first week of July and run through end August. Lyn and Paul will be organizing these matches. Eligible members (those playing at or below Ladies’ Division 2 and Men’s C) should sign up on the sheets provided indicating their availability and whether they wish to play as a regular team member, or as a spare.

Court Cleaning

The blowing of the courts during playtime continues to be a source of annoyance to some members. The executive had a lengthy discussion as to how this could be alleviated. Several suggestions were put forward including hiring someone to blow the courts at 7:30 a.m. each morning. Apparently, though, blowing early in the a.m. has met with resistance from the neighbours and since the courts only need to be blown after a windy night it was felt hiring someone to do it on an intermittent basis would be difficult. In other clubs, the courts are closed for maintenance at certain posted times and the executive felt that WRTC should do the same. A sign will be posted on the courts indicating that when requested, those members playing in the morning should be prepared to vacate the courts for ten minutes so that they can be blown. Keeping the courts free of needles and cones will prolong the life of the surface of the courts resulting in reduced costs to the club.

Juniors

The Saturday Junior's Camp is going very well. The last day will be June 20, or 27 if one of the sessions gets rained out. The summer camp will run from 8 a.m. to noon, July 6 through 17. Brochures are available on the club notice board and online.

Those individuals wishing to use the ball machine may obtain the key to the shed by calling Mansour (604 531 4233) or Paul (604 535 7472).

Court Congestion

The problem of congestion was discussed at length  during the last executive meeting. Suggested solutions included the use of timers to  limit play, reducing member-ship numbers in future and changing the end time for drop-in tennis from 3:30 p.m. to 2:30 p.m. After weighing all the options, it was decided the most effective means for handling congestion was to start the drop-in tennis at 11:30 a.m. and end it at 2:30 p.m. This change will become effective July 1, and a new sign posted.
